Quality Air Purifiers for Home and Office
There are dozens of air purifier technologies and brands on the market, yet the truth is that 90% of home air purifiers simply don’t clean the air. The inexpensive air purifiers that you see at your local hardware or big box store don’t move large enough volumes of air to adequately clean a room. Even worse, many air purifiers produce ozone, which can irritate your respiratory system or damage your lungs.
The good news is that industry-leading companies such as IQAir, AllerAir, Austin Air, Blueair and Oransi offer air purifiers that work safely and effectively, providing relief from allergies, asthma and environmental illnesses. More importantly perhaps, these high-quality filtration systems can protect you from the harmful airborne pollutants that can affect your long-term health.

More about Modern Alchemy Canada

Air Purifier Buying Guide
Some useful tips from the experts at Modern Alchemy Canada on how to buy a home or office air purifier:
It’s All About the Motor. Choose an air purifier with a motor that’s powerful enough to generate 4 to 8 air exchanges per hour to effectively clean the room. The air purifier should also be properly sealed so that contaminated incoming air doesn’t bypass the filter system and exit the air purifier without being cleaned.
Don’t Fall For It. As a minimum, an air purifier should have a medical-grade HEPA filter that meets the industry standard of removing 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns. Avoid air purifiers labelled as “HEPA-type” or “HEPA-like” as they are not true HEPA filters, with measured particle filtration levels as low as 55%.
Smaller Particle Filtration Means Cleaner Air. If your budget permits, choose an air purifier that delivers better-than-HEPA performance. Today’s leading air purifier manufacturers (e.g., IQAir, Blueair, AllerAir) have all developed technologies that capture much smaller particles than standard HEPA air purifiers can (e.g., 0.1 to 0.003 microns). These tiny particulates are the most harmful to your long-term health as they can penetrate deeper into your lungs and even enter your bloodstream. Better in the air purifier than in you!
Don’t Buy One That Only Does Half the Job. Good air purifiers should also be able to handle light chemicals and gases, as there are low levels of harmful VOCs and toxic chemicals in every home (e.g., from personal care products, cleansers and detergents, home HVAC systems, off-gassing etc.). If you’re going to invest several hundred dollars in a home air purifier, make sure that it does it all.
More Really Is Better. If you are chemically sensitive or being exposed to more than minute quantities of gases or chemicals, ensure that the air purifier you choose contains activated carbon for the adsorption of gaseous pollutants. Avoid air purifiers with only a thin layer of carbon (e.g., a filter pad dusted with carbon) as this will not do the trick. A deep bed with at least 12 pounds of impregnated granular carbon works best, with AllerAir air purifiers being the top choice for the chemically sensitive. Or try an air purifier like the Oransi EJ120, which has an advanced high-efficiency pleated activated carbon filter that increases the surface area for gas adsorption without impeding air flow.
Make the Cheap Filter Do the Heavy Lifting. Choose an air purifier that has a first stage pre-filter to capture larger particles in order to avoid clogging the downstream HEPA and carbon filters and shortening their lifespan.
Don’t Believe Everything You Read. Be sure to choose an air purifier that is rated for the size of the room you are placing it in. Tread carefully when navigating manufacturer and retailer room coverage statistics, as these figures are often overstated (e.g., based on too low a number of air exchanges per hour to adequately clean a room). Modern Alchemy states the delivered air flow rates and realistic room coverage figures for all of the air purifiers that we sell.
Just Say No to Ozone. Steer clear of Ozone Cleaners that deliberately release ozone into the air. Many Negative Ion and Electrostatic air purifiers also generate ozone (O3), sometimes above recommended government safety levels (e.g., 0.05 ppm). While these air purifiers are excellent at removing smoke odours, prolonged exposure to ozone can aggravate respiratory issues and cause lung damage. There have been several class-action lawsuits against the manufacturers of ozone air purifiers, so we recommend avoiding these air cleaners altogether.
Silence Is Golden. If quietness is important to you, choose an air purifier that generates less than 35 dB on low speed. Blueair, IQAir and Epurair air purifiers all meet this criterion and are truly “whisper-quiet.” If you are ultra-sensitive to sound, check out the IQAir HealthPro Plus or the Oransi EJ120, which are two of the quietest high-performance air purifiers on the market. On its lowest speed, the Oransi air purifier doesn't even register on the decibel scale!
Crunch the Numbers. Compare the operating costs over the life of the air purifier, taking into account the recommended filter change schedule, replacement filter costs and power consumption levels. If you want a low-maintenance air purifier with a long filter life and low lifetime operating costs, Austin Air and Epurair air purifiers are your best bets.
Now What Do I Do? Avoid air purifier manufacturers that frequently change their models or discontinue products as this could mean that replacement filters and other accessories won't be available down the road, making your air purifier obsolete. The air purifier brands that we carry all provide excellent support for older models.
In it For the Long-Run. Look for a manufacturer that stands behind what it sells, offering a minimum 5-year warranty. AllerAir, IQAir and Oransi all go above and beyond, offering 10 years on most residential air cleaners, while the Canadian-made Epurair MA-1P and MA-1C air purifiers cover you with a lifetime warranty.

Air Purifier Picks by City
Each Canadian city has its own air quality issues depending on geography, temperature/humidity levels, air movement, industrialization, traffic congestion, emissions from surrounding regions, proximity to wildfire zones and the presence of pollinating trees, grasses and weeds. Poor outdoor air usually translates into poor indoor air as fine particulates, allergens and gaseous pollutants can easily seep inside your home. Gas Stoves Linked to Asthma and Higher Covid Death Rate
Jan 14, 2020. Past research has shown that cooking with gas stoves significantly elevates the risk of developing asthma and respiratory disease (a 24% increase in lifetime risk). Now a new study has shown that long-term exposure to elevated N02 - the main pollutant from gas appliances - is linked to higher death rates from Covid-19. Based on the cumulative results of this research, the New England Journal of Medicine has recommended that gas appliances be removed from the market. Source: Undark
Hydrogen Peroxide Disinfectants a Potential Health Hazard
Dec 1, 2020. University of Saskatchewan researchers have found that frequent cleaning of surfaces with hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectants can pose a health risk. Mopping the floor just once caused H202 levels at head height to spike to 60% of maximum exposure levels. Wiping a counter could result in even higher concentrations at the breathing zone, causing respiratory irritation. Caution should be used in homes with children and pets, as they are physically closer to the floor. Source: EurekAlert
