Toronto Air Quality Issues and Air Purifier Recommendations

Why You Need an Air Purifier in Toronto

Although major strides have been made in improving Toronto's air quality over the last few years, with smog alerts now very rare, Toronto Public Health cautions that airborne pollutants are still a serious cause of illness in the city. Traffic emissions continue to be at the forefront of Toronto’s air pollution issues, with vehicles pumping nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, black carbon/soot, VOCs and ultrafine particles (UFPs) into the air. UFPs (less than 0.1 microns in size) are even more hazardous than harmful PM2.5 particulates, as they can penetrate deeper into your lungs and pass into your bloodstream. Not only do these particles cause respiratory issues, but research has shown that long-term exposure is linked with both cardiovascular disease and lung cancer. In children, the chronic inhalation of fine particulates from traffic-related air pollution has been shown to exacerbate, or even cause, asthma.

FACT: Toronto Public Health estimates that air pollution in Toronto is responsible for 1,300 premature deaths and 3,500 hospitalizations annually.

Not surprisingly, the closer you live to a major road, the worse the air quality in your community (and in your home) is likely to be, with concentrations of contaminants still double the norm at a distance of 280m away. University of Toronto researchers recorded UFP levels as high as 20,000 particles per cubic centimetre of air on a typical summer day in the city, which means you could be inhaling up to 10 million of these high-risk pollutants with every breath while outdoors. Coupled with particulates from home HVAC systems and the toxins generated by everyday living (e.g., housecleaning, cooking), it is critical to ensure that your indoor air is as clean as possible to limit exposure and give your lungs a break.

FACT: Half of all Torontonians live within 250m of a major roadway.

From an allergy standpoint, Toronto (and most of Southern Ontario) is inundated with high-levels of ragweed allergens from mid-August to October, a situation that has worsened considerably since pesticides have been banned. Alarmingly, there is scientific evidence to suggest that air pollution can make ragweed even more problematic for allergy sufferers, with ragweed samples taken near busy roads being more allergenic than samples taken from the woods. Thankfully, high-quality room air purifiers can offer some relief to seasonal allergy sufferers, providing an allergen-free zone in their homes.
