Day Care Centres

How often do you think about the air quality that exists inside your day care facility? As a childcare provider, you shoulder a heavy responsibility to maintain the health and well-being of the children in your care. This can prove a serious challenge in the face of poorly ventilated buildings, airborne allergens and chemicals, and the rapid spread of airborne viruses and bacteria among children in close contact with one another.

Young children differ from older age groups in terms of physiological structures and functioning. Their lungs are still developing, as are their immune systems, and they have higher respiratory rates and levels of physical activity. As a result, they are much more vulnerable to indoor air pollutants and allergens. Moreover, research has shown that exposure to such pollutants as a child can result in life-long health issues.

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), up to 80% of children with asthma and allergies develop symptoms before age 5. Because some airborne substances can trigger allergy symptoms or asthma attacks (e.g., pollen, mould spores, animal dander, dust), the AAAAI also recommends reducing contact with these substances in early childhood to delay or prevent the onset of allergies or asthma later in life. In addition, the AAAAI advises parents that placing young children in group day care is likely to increase their exposure to respiratory infections and possibly trigger asthma.

Another serious issue facing day care centres today is the airborne transmission of diseases, which occurs to a greater extent than previously believed. According to the Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee, air cleaners are an important and necessary technology for decreasing the concentration of airborne infectious pathogens in a room, and for preventing the spread of diseases such as tuberculosis, chicken pox, shingles and measles.

By operating portable air purifiers from Modern Alchemy Air Purifiers in playrooms, nap areas and reception areas, you can help to clean the air of allergy and asthma triggers, harsh chemicals, volatile off-gases from furniture and carpets, odours and with the addition of an optional germicidal UVC lamp, airborne bacteria, viruses and mould spores. This will not only help to create a healthier, happier and more productive learning environment for the children in your care, but also impress current and potential clients by showing them that you are truly concerned about their children’s health.

“When we decided to improve the air quality in our day care center, we purchased an AllerAir air purifier on the advice of personnel at the Lung Association. There was such a major improvement in the health of the care giving personnel as well as the children at the center, the directors decided to buy 8 more units. We are more than completely satisfied with the results of these purifiers and would highly recommend these units to anyone with children in their charge.”   Suzanne Latreille, Seattle
