Inside the 5-Minute Mold Kit

Developed by the scientists at Alexeter Technologies, a firm whose clients include Homeland Security, the Environmental Protection Agency, the US military and government agencies in 44 countries, the Healthful Home 5-Minute Mold Test is an industry-leading product that provides on-the-spot test results for the presence of toxic mold. This do-it-yourself test kit detects two broad groups of harmful toxic molds – Stachybotrys (which produces the most deadly toxins) and Aspergillus / Penicillium (which can cause serious respiratory infections such as aspergillosis). These two groups cover over 30 individual species of toxic mold that have been identified by the CDC/EPA as being the most likely to be found in home and buildings with water damage, as well as posing the greatest health threats to people and pets. As the name suggests, this home mold test kit provides results in under 5 minutes, either bringing you immediate piece of mind (if negative) or permitting you to take remedial action as quickly as possible (if positive).

Adapting the technology used in medical and microbiological laboratories for decades, the Healthful Home 5-Minute Mold Test Kit uses mold-specific antibodies and lateral flow immunoassay technology (i.e., a test strip device) to detect over 30 species of toxic mold in minutes. The Healthful Home instant mold test kit includes two tests, one for Aspergillus/Penicillium [A] and one for Stachybotrys [B], permitting you to isolate the results for the two groups of molds independently. This is useful for determining whether you have the more deadly Stachybotrys species (i.e., toxic black mold).

toxic mold test kit instructions

Using this instant home mold test is a breeze, with no mess and no special skills required. The all-in-one combination swab, wetting buffer and sample dropper [C] in the Healthful Home Five-Minute Mold Test Kit eliminates the need to fumble with separate bottles, tubes and droppers. To conduct the test, wipe the swab across a surface with visible mold, or if no mold is visible, simply wipe a flat surface with the swab, and then put on the cap. Break the liquid bulb to release the testing solution over the sample. Put five drops of the mixture into each test tray, and check them after five minutes. Two red lines means a positive test (i.e., toxic molds are present), while one red line indicates a negative result (i.e., no toxic molds present within the detection limits of the test).

In terms of where to sample, if your primary concern is an area with visible or suspected mold growth (e.g., bathroom wall, ceiling tiles, basement), you should sample that area. If you are concerned about the overall air quality in a specific room, then take a sample of the dust in that room by swabbing any flat surface (e.g., bookshelves, window sills, door frames, baseboards). Although mold spores can float in the air at length, eventually they will come to rest on flat surfaces in the room, so taking a dust sample can be viewed as sampling the room air over an extended period of time.

Note that the Healthful Home Mold Test is specifically designed so that it does not give positive results for background molds that are naturally found in homes in the absence of water damage. In other words, a positive test result indicates that you have detectable levels of toxic mold in the area sampled, specifically Stachybotrys, Aspergillus or Penicillium. If the test is positive, the Healthful Home Mold Test Kit provides you with the option of sending a sample to an AIHA-certified lab in the US for confirmation (additional swabs [F], a lab request form [D] and a lab mailer [E] are included in the test kit). This is strictly optional, with an extra fee of $30 USD per sample to be paid directly to the lab.

Tests For Instant home mold test focuses on two groups of toxic molds that are commonly associated with water damage and most harmful to humans – Stachybotrys and Aspergillus/Penicillium. Individual species detected include:

Stachybotrys test:   s. echinata and s. chartarum (toxic black mold).
Aspergillus/Penicillium test:
  • Aspergillus species: niger, fumigatus, candidus, flavipes, flavus, nidulans, ochraceus, penicilloides, restrictus, sclerotiorum, sydowii, terreus, unguis, versicolor
  • Penicillium species: aurantogriseum, brevicompactum, chryrosegenum, citrinum, corylophilum, crustosum, expansum, glabrum, marquandii, roqueforti, spinulosum, variotii, viridis
  • Other species: Chaetomium globusum, Neosartorya fisheri and some species of Paecilomyces.
Note: This test kit does not detect Cladosporium or Fusarium molds
Collection Method Swab
Number of Kits Required If you are only concerned about one room or a suspected "moldy area," then one 5-Minute Toxic Mold Test Kit is enough. You may sample multiple areas with one test kit, but the results will then reflect the "average contamination" for the entire area, so if there is a specific area that is badly contaminated, you will not be able to pinpoint it. Using a separate test kit for each area would be more accurate. A good rule of thumb when testing general air quality in the home is to use one test kit for each floor as a starting point.
Test Detection Limit In general, each of the two instant mold tests (Stachybotrys and Asp/Pen) are able to detect as few as 1 x 105 spores/ml. A negative test result indicates that these toxic molds are not detectable within the limits of the test at the test location (however, there may be molds in lower concentrations or in other locations of the house).
Time to Receive Test Results 5 minutes
Expiry Test kit should be used within the expiration date printed on each package
Who Should Test for Toxic Mold This do-it-yourself instant home mold test is ideal for:
  • Homeowners who want to quickly determine if the visible mold in their home is toxic or not
  • Homeowners who suspect that chronically damp or water-damaged areas in their home may harbour toxic mold even though none is visible
  • People who have no visible or suspected mold issues, but want a quick and inexpensive way of confirming there are no toxic molds present for peace of mind
  • Potential home buyers who want to ensure that there are no toxic mold-related issues before purchasing a home
  • Office workers and apartment/condo dwellers who want to determine if there are toxic mold issues in their building due to poorly maintained HVAC systems
Note: If you need specific mold counts or you want to identify all mold species in the test area (and not just the toxic ones), then you should consider the Screen Check Mold Test Kit instead.

About Toxic Mold Note: Hazard information focuses on toxic molds targeted by the Healthful Home 5-Minute Mold Test Kit. For information on the hazards of mold in general, see the Screen Check Mold Test Kit.

Toxic molds produce mycotoxins that can affect the human nervous system, with more than 200 different mycotoxins having been identified to date. Two of the more common toxic molds found in indoor air are Stachybotrys chartarum (better known as “toxic black mold”) and Aspergillus, a large group of molds with several species that are dangerous to humans (e.g., cause aspergillosis or release carcinogenic toxins). Like non-toxic molds, the toxic varieties also produce spores that can cause allergic reactions in susceptible people.
Indoor Sources of Toxic
Stachybotrys chartarum is a greenish-black gelatinous mold that can be found on materials with a high cellulose content (e.g., drywall, ceiling tiles, wood, fiberboard, gypsum board, cardboard, paper) that is chronically moist due to flooding, leaks, condensation, excessive humidity or poor ventilation.

Aspergillus molds generally have a powdery texture. The three species that most often cause disease in humans are Aspergillus niger (black on the surface and white/yellow underneath), Aspergillus fumigatus (blue-green or gray on the surface and white/tan underneath) and Aspergillus flavus (yellow-green on the surface and gold or reddish-brown underneath). Aspergillus molds can be found growing inside dirty air conditioners, on or inside walls, under basement steps, on subflooring, on basement ceilings and around leaky roofs.

Penicillium molds are generally blue or green in colour, and are commonly found in carpet, wallpaper, duct insulation and furnishings that have been damaged by water. Chaetomium globusum contaminates damp buildings and homes, often being found on wet wood, tiles, drywall and window frames. Initially, the colonies are cottony and white, turning grey or olive colour as they mature.
Symptoms of Toxic Mold Exposure
  • Allergy symptoms, including sneezing, runny nose, sore throat and eye irritation
  • Coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pains
  • Fever and chills
  • Mucous membrane irritation
  • Dermatitis, rashes
  • Headaches, chronic fatigue, memory problems, loss of coordination
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Exacerbation of asthma
  • Immunosuppression
Long-Term Health Concerns
  • Mold mycotoxins can have very serious long-term health effects, including immunosuppressive, carcinogenic and teratogenic effects, as well as causing circulatory, respiratory and neurological problems. Scientists estimate that approximately 500,000 deaths occur in the US each year due to exposure to indoor toxic molds.
  • Stachybotrys chartarum produces the most harmful toxins. Trichothecenes can damage lung capillaries, leading to pulmonary hemorrhage, while Satratoxin H weakens the immune system, increasing susceptibility to opportunistic infections that are sometimes lethal.
  • Microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) produced by Stachybotrys chartarum and other toxic molds are suspected to play a major role in “sick building syndrome.”
  • People with fungal allergies, respiratory diseases or weakened immune systems are vulnerable to aspergillosis, severe lung infections caused by aspergillus molds that can progress to whole-body infections, and sometimes death. Aspergillus fumigatus is responsible for 90% of aspergillosis cases, including invasive infections.
  • Aspergillus flavus produces aflatoxins, one of the most potent carcinogens known to man. Aflatoxins can cause acute or chronic liver damage, liver cancer and stunted growth and delayed development in children.
  • Exposure to large amounts of Aspergillus niger spores can cause lung inflammation (pneumonitis), and has also been linked to hearing problems and hearing loss.
  • The inhalation of Penicillium mouds molds can lead to pulmonary infections that may spread to other areas of the body (e.g., lymphatic system, liver, bones) and are often fatal. High levels of Penicillium have also been linked to the development of asthma in children.
  • Penicillium molds and Aspergillus niger both produce ochratoxins, a suspected carcinogen that is also damaging to the kidneys and liver.
  • The inhalation of Chaetomium globusum can lead to allergies, asthma, sinusitis, respiratory illnesses and possibly nerve damage.
