Blueair Aware and Friend App

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified indoor air quality as one of the five most urgent environmental risks to our health, yet most of us have no idea what is in our indoor air. That’s why Blueair developed the Aware Indoor Air Quality Monitor. The Aware uses independent high-tech sensors to measure a variety of potentially dangerous indoor air pollutants that can not only cause immediate discomfort, but lead to health issues for you and your family down the road.

The Blueair Aware Indoor Air Quality Monitor makes the invisible visible, allowing you to instantly determine the quality of the air in a room. A blue light on the Aware’s display bar indicates good air quality, while an orange bar alerts you to a potential problem.

At the same time, the Blueair Aware Indoor Air Quality Monitor sends more detailed air quality information directly to the Blueair Friend App on your smartphone or smart device. Available through a free download, this App provides you with on- demand instant measurements, updates and alerts from the Aware monitor.

The Blueair Friend App provides you with overall readings for several indoor air pollutants, as measured by the Blueair Aware Intelligent Air Quality Monitor:

  • Particulate Matter (PM2.5) – This includes fine particulates that are under 2.5 microns in size, which are the greatest concern from a health standpoint. These tiny particles are more likely to penetrate deep into the lungs where they can become trapped, causing acute or chronic respiratory illnesses. They can also migrate into the bloodstream and be carried directly to the vital organs. In fact, the latest research suggests that chronic inhalation of PM2.5 particles can lead to heart attacks, strokes and even cancer. Major indoor sources include vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions and smog that filters in from outside, combustion particles from home HVAC systems, particulates from cigarette smoke, wood smoke and candles, cooking and emissions from printers in offices.
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) – This includes harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, toluene and benzene, which are found to some degree in every home and workplace. Common sources of VOCs include building materials, HVAC systems, tobacco/wood smoke, cooking, flooring, paint, solvents, new furniture and carpets, glues and adhesives, household cleaners, air fresheners, hairspray and other personal hygiene products. Many VOCs are toxic or carcinogenic to humans, with long-term exposure to low levels potentially leading to liver, kidney and nerve damage. In addition, exposure to VOCs during pregnancy has been shown to cause miscarriages, low birth weight and birth defects.
  • Carbon Dioxide (estimated) – Major sources of carbon dioxide indoors include exhalation by humans and drift from outdoors in homes near industrial areas or congested roads. Measuring CO2 levels in office and apartment buildings is particularly important as inadequate ventilation systems can lead to CO2 build-up. Too much CO2 can cause drowsiness, lethargy and headaches, while chronic exposure to high levels can cause acidosis. In addition, a high CO2 level from poor ventilation indicates that other harmful gases and pollutants may be building up as well.
  • Background Readings This includes temperature and humidity levels to ensure that your environment is comfortable and healthy (e.g., monitoring humidity levels can help to prevent the growth of mould and mildew in your home).

The Friend App does far more than simply provide you with readings from your Blueair Aware. The app permits you to chart and track changes in your indoor air quality by the hour, day or month, placing a wealth of historical data at your fingertips. In selected cities, it also provides you with outdoor air quality measurements, including the AQI (air quality index), PM2.5 counts and ozone levels. The Friend App uses EPA’s AQI scale, with levels under 50 indicating good outdoor air quality and levels over 300 indicating dangerous conditions. In addition, the Friend App permits you to control the LED intensity on the Blueair Aware, with a night mode that automatically turns the Aware’s light off at night.

Blueair Aware Friend App and Sense

Pairing the Blueair Aware Indoor Air Quality Monitor and Friend App with a Blueair Wi-Fi enabled air purifier (e.g., Classic 205, Classic 405, Classic 505, Classic 605 and Sense+) offers you the ultimate control over the air quality in your home. When the Friend App sends you an air quality alert, you can respond instantly, using the app to adjust the Blueair air purifier over the Wi-Fi network from virtually anywhere. If you have a large home, you can set up an Aware monitor and paired Blueair unit in two locations (e.g., upstairs and downstairs), with everything being controlled through the Friend App.

Alternatively, the Blueair Aware can be set to auto mode through the Friend App. This permits the Aware to automatically adjust the fan speed of a Wi-Fi enabled Blueair air purifier, boosting it up to the high setting if abnormally high levels of pollutants are detected, and returning the air purifier to a more comfortable fan speed once the problem is under control.

The Blueair Aware Indoor Air Quality Monitor should be placed in the room or area you want to monitor on a flat, stable surface, with open air around it – ideally at your breathing level. A bookshelf or side table in a living room, a nightstand in the bedroom or on your desk at work would be perfect locations. The more open the placement, the more accurate the air reading will be and the better the Wi-Fi connection. Although the Blueair Aware can be moved from room to room, it is generally better to keep it in one location as the sensors on the Aware learn to read and calibrate a room over time.

The Blueair Aware Intelligent Air Quality Monitor is the perfect choice for health-conscious individuals concerned about the air they are breathing at home, work or play. The uses of this industry-changing device are virtually endless. Have your child take the Aware to school to confirm that his or her learning environment is healthy. Take it with you when you travel to verify that your hotel room is pollutant-free, or to the gym to ensure that it is really a healthy place for you to be. With the Blueair Aware and Friend App, your health and well-being are finally in the palm of your hand!
